Client: Royal Commission for Jubail

The Royal Commission for Jubail & Yanbu (RC) has determined the need for a study to assess the environmental and health impacts associated with the expansion of residential area in Jubail City into an area (Sabkha) that used for the evaporation of extra irrigation water in Jubail Industrial City (JIC). This area became with time a bird sanctuary containing up to 80,000 birds during the winter seasons.

The study described the relevant environmental conditions prior to reclamation of the areas identified for residential development; assessed such conditions on the future development of the area; assessed the impacts of any development that will take place there (short term and long term); and proposed mitigation measures to control any adverse impacts that may arise from the development activities of the study areas. Also, the study included the preparation of an environmental management plan and an environmental monitoring plan.

Ma’aden Aluminum Company has contracted AH to prepare an Operations Environmental and Social Management Plan (OESMP) for the Aluminum Bauxite Mine which is part of the integrated aluminum complex being constructed by Ma’aden Aluminum Company, a joint venture between Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Ma’aden) and Alcoa.

This OESMP has been prepared based on the requirements of the Equator Principles and the financial lenders of the project. It has also provided information to the Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME) for the purposes of securing the Operations Environmental Permit to Operate (EPO).

Client – RGC for Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Maaden)

AH Environmental was contracted by Radicon Gulf to prepare a comprehensive EIA for Maaden’s effluent pipeline project (10,000 m3/day). The purpose of this project is to install pipeline to convey treated effluent water from existing sewage treatment plant in the city of Taif to four Maaden mine sites. The total length of the pipeline is approximately 506 Km.

The project consists of an effluent pipeline, storage tanks, pumping stations between Taif and Maaden mine sites in the Mid-Western region of Saudi Arabia.

Client: Sabic and Mitsubishi Rayon Company Ltd.

Jacobs Engineering contracted AH Environmental Consult to prepare an EIA for the Saudi Chevron Phillips Petrochemical Conversion Company. The new facility will produce nylon 6,6 from 90 wt. % Hexamethylenediamine [1,6-hexanediamine, H2N(CH2)6NH2] water solution (HMDA) and Adipic Acid powder (ADA) [Hexanedioic Acid, HOOC(CH2)4COOH] in Jubail Industrial City, KSA. The proposed facility also includes a nylon compounding unit in which the raw nylon polymer is mixed with various additives to produce the required characteristics for various products. AH was responsible for completion of the technical assessment of all environmental impacts to meet World Bank/IFC standards. AH also assisted Jacobs in the preparation of the permit application package.

URS has contracted AH Environmental to provide environmental support services for a new facility to be constructed by Sabic Catalyst Company (SABCAT) in Jubail Industrial City, KSA. The facility will initially produce 50 tons per year of the Ziegler-Natta type catalyst to be used in processes for the production of polyethylene and polypropylene. The facility includes the production reactors and associated utilities.

Booz and Company contracted AH Environmental to assist in their project to identify needs and processes to support the reorganization of management functions for the Saline Water Conversion Company (SWCC) in Saudi Arabia. The new organizational structure includes a separate defined organizational function for Safety, Security and Environmental systems. AH Environmental produced a comprehensive and detailed manual to guide SWCC in their efforts to establish and implement an environmental management program, environmental management system, and reporting and recordkeeping activities to track organizational and business unit progress toward achieving defined environmental objectives.

AH Environmental prepared the environmental Permit Application Package (PAP) for a new EVA/LDPE polymerization plant to be located at SIPChem’s existing facilities in Jubail Industrial City, KSA. The facility is designed to produce EVA and small amounts of LDPE from ethylene and vinyl acetate monomer raw materials. The PAP application involved the preparation of a stand-alone permit for the new EVA facilities and the upgrade of the existing Utilities and Offsite (U&O) permit for SIPChem facilities.

Client – ERM for Saudi Aramco

ERM has contracted AH Environmental to conduct a test for one of the facilities fuel gas fired boiler for a period of 1 week. Continuous emission measurement data has been measured and recorded for NOx, SO2, O2, flow rate, and CO2. AH has provided a fully equipped source testing station (including certified calibration standards and other necessary gases to the agreed location at the Aramco facility and conducted the test to client’s satisfaction.

Saudi International Petrochemical Company (Sipchem) was in the process of constructing storage tanks for acetic acid and acetic anhydride at the industrial port in Jubail, Saudi Arabia where loading of these chemicals would take place.Sipchem has contracted AH to prepare an air dispersion model for acetic acid (AA) and acetic anhydride (AAn) emissions generated during loading at the port.

AH Environmental teamed up with Gulf Consult to conduct an assessment of 15 wastewater treatment plants for Saudi Aramco. The assessment covered refineries, gas plants and terminals located at different locations within the Kingdom. AH provided technical assessment of the unit operations at each of the 15 facilities and addressed the unit operations and the treatment system as a whole. Recommendations were given on improving the performance of the unit operations and the feasibility of separating any streams to improve the performance of the treatment systems, lower the loads and minimize water consumption. Also, recommendations for treatment, reuse or recycling of the effluents were investigated as well.

A new facility was proposed by Saudi Aramco to transfer the sanitary sewer water from Ras Tanura Terminal South (RTTS) to Rahima Sewage treatment Plant via Admin Lift Station outside the Refinery.

AH Environmental was contracted to conduct a detailed flow investigation and characterisation and calculate average, peak and maximum hourly and daily flow rates; and investigate the capacity of the existing lift station against current flow conditions; and do flow analysis to ensure that the pump station capacity is able to handle additional flow rates.

AH was contracted by Radicon Gulf to prepare a Project Risk Assessment (PRA) for Saudi Aramco Project No. BI-10-00873 – Install Sanitary Wastewater Conveyance Facility at Ras Tanura Terminal South (RTTS). The Project Risk Assessment was prepared by a team comprised of Saudi Aramco, Radicon Gulf Consult and AH. There were a total of 37 risk factors considered that could have an impact on this projects. Each of these risk factors were risk assessed to prioritise them, and specific action items were agreed which must be implemented to control the different risks.

AH Environmental was contracted by Jacobs Zate for the preparation of a qualitative and quantitative risk assessment to identify and mitigate the combinations of events that, if they occur, will lead to a severe accident (e.g. major explosion) or any other undesired event and estimate the risk, such as production loss, damage to the facility, population, environment or a combination of risk types. The scope included 6 sales gas pipeline systems, ranging between 420 km to 50 kms.
